Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, the orange market volume in South America increased from 19 580 to 20 049 thousand tonnes. This growth was partly driven by a significant rise in Brazilian orange juice exports, stimulated by U.S. demand following Hurricane Irma and the recovery of Brazilian supply after a small 2016/17 harvest. Concurrent promotional campaigns in Europe, focusing on health benefits, helped reinforce demand for Brazilian orange products.

Market volume then declined slightly to 19 629 thousand tonnes in 2020 and stabilized at 19 540 thousand tonnes in 2021. Over these two years, the market value exhibited a different trajectory, rising to $15.6 billion in 2020 before moderating to $14.6 billion in 2021, reflecting shifts in pricing and underlying market conditions.

A sustained recovery began in 2022, with market volume reaching 20 476 thousand tonnes and climbing further to 21 166 thousand tonnes in 2023. The market value also grew strongly, hitting $18.1 billion in 2023. This period was characterized by stable prices for the processing industry and an increase in the valuation of orange juice. Furthermore, rising consumer demands in key export markets like the European Union for enhanced food safety and sustainable production practices began to influence market dynamics.
