The market for fresh or chilled onions and shallots in Comoros expanded from 2 390 t in 2018 to a peak of 2 637 t in 2021. This growth was underpinned by a consistent annual increase in domestic production, which rose from 1 460 t to 1 589 t over the period, coupled with strong import volumes that reached 1 048 t in 2021.

A sharp contraction followed, with the total market volume dropping to 2 095 t in 2022 and further to 2 005 t in 2023. This decline was driven entirely by a dramatic fall in imports, which plunged to 468 t and then 374 t, while local production stabilized at approximately 1 630 t.
