Earlier Report Observations
The production of fresh olives in Brazil began a rapid ascent from 2018, coinciding with the country's initial phase of adopting olive cultivation. This development was supported by consistently high and growing consumer demand for olives and olive oil, with purchases having increased by 60% over the preceding decade. Even during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, which disrupted global supply chains, the Brazilian market continued to expand due to strong consumer loyalty.
Growth accelerated in 2021 when a global shortage of shipping containers hindered olive imports, increasing reliance on domestic output. In subsequent years, the expansion of commercial olive plantations, notably in regions like Maria da Fé in Minas Gerais and Rio Grande do Sul, boosted the supply of raw material. Concurrent investments in agronomic research and technology, funded by CNPq and university partnerships, helped improve the yield and quality of Brazilian olives.
By 2023, a severe drought in Spain and other key producing regions triggered a global olive oil production crisis, sharply raising import prices. This enhanced the competitiveness of local production and spurred a further volume increase. As a result, Brazil's fresh olive output rose from 1 620 t in 2018 to 6 862 t in 2023, marking a more than fourfold expansion over the period.
