Earlier Report Observations

From 2018, state-led research programs for oil seeds breeding, targeting high yield and oil content above 40%, established a foundation for consistent production, helping keep market volume steady around 12,000 t. The Seed Trade Association's renewed leadership in 2020 enhanced the availability of certified seeds, aligning with growing consumer preference for improved varieties and supporting market stability.

Private companies such as Agriseeds expanded quality seed marketing from 2019, while Seed Co Limited launched high-yielding maize hybrids in 2021, reflecting genetic innovation that also benefited oil seeds development. Seed Co further introduced locally adapted oil seed varieties in 2023, strengthening supply amid continued government policy support for research and development.

Regulatory changes in seed labeling and certification during 2022, pushed by industry associations, ensured better quality and traceability. State-owned Grain Marketing Board invested in storage upgrades that same year, facilitating distribution, while the entry of new player Zimbabwe Super Seeds boosted the availability of certified oil seeds in the market.
