The Hungarian oat market volume grew steadily from 57.2 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 77.7 thousand tons in 2021. This expansion was supported by the COVID-19 pandemic, which boosted demand for staple foods as consumers spent more time at home, and by a strengthening focus on health and nutrition that increased the appeal of fiber-rich oat products.

In 2022, the market contracted sharply to 36.4 thousand tons, largely due to a halving of domestic production. While global economic uncertainties and ongoing pandemic effects may have contributed, no specific production-side factors were highlighted in the available sources. By 2023, the market recovered to 57.3 thousand tons, approaching pre-growth levels as production rebounded.

Oats production in Hungary saw a two-year increase before declining. In 2021, production remained virtually unchanged at 76 690 tonnes compared to the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, production grew by 29.3%, representing an annualized rate of 8.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2020 at 76 970 tonnes, while the largest year-over-year increase occurred in 2019 at 18.5%.

Exports oats from Hungary

Exports in kind, t

After a two-year uptick, oats export volumes from Hungary declined. In 2021, exports totaled 4 823 tonnes, marking a significant decrease of 12.5% from the previous year. Between 2018 and 2021, exports increased by 59.1%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 16.7%. The peak export volume was recorded in 2020 at 5 509 tonnes, with the largest year-over-year increase occurring in 2019 at 37.5%.

From 2018 to 2021, Italy, Germany, and Austria were the main destinations for Hungarian oats exports in kind. Italy accounted for 21.4% of exports, Germany for 16.9%, and Austria for 14.1%. Together, these three countries represented 52.4% of total oats exports from Hungary during this period.

Oats exports from Hungary increased for the third consecutive year. In 2021, exports amounted to 2 181 thousand US dollars, reflecting a strong rise of 21.8% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports grew by 110.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 28.1%.

From 2018 to 2021, France, Germany, and Italy were the principal destinations for Hungarian oats exports in value terms. France accounted for 23.1% of export value, Germany for 21.0%, and Italy for 17.4%. Collectively, these three markets represented 61.5% of total oats export flows from Hungary.

Imports oats to Hungary

Foreign oats supplies to Hungary increased for the third consecutive year. In 2021, imports stood at 5 869 tonnes, equivalent to a substantial gain of 125.8% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, imports surged by 509%, with a compound annual growth rate of 82.6%.

From 2018 to 2021, Slovakia, Ukraine, and Poland were the leading suppliers of oats to Hungary in kind. Slovakia accounted for 48.1% of imports, Ukraine for 16.4%, and Poland for 15.8%. Together, these three countries supplied 80.3% of total oats imports to Hungary during this period.
