The Vietnamese market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts expanded significantly in 2019, reaching 510.7 thousand tons. This growth was primarily driven by a surge in imports, responding to increased domestic demand for convenient snacks and healthy food. The entry of new processing companies and investments in modern production lines from the previous year bolstered supply capabilities. However, in 2020, despite heightened consumer demand for snacks due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the total market volume contracted to 476.9 thousand tons. This decline occurred as major investments in advanced processing technology enabled a sharp rise in exports, reducing the volume available for domestic consumption.

From 2021 onward, the market experienced a gradual contraction, influenced by stricter enforcement of food safety regulations under Decree 15/2018/ND-CP. These rules mandated product testing before market release, which tightened supply. By 2022, the market stabilized around 460.0 thousand tons, supported by sustained consumer preference for safe, organic products and the introduction of new nutritional labeling rules that increased transparency. The market saw a slight further decrease to 452.0 thousand tons in 2023. Preliminary 2024 trade data shows a continued strong inflow of imports, indicating robust underlying domestic demand.

Vietnam's production of raw groundnuts declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 425.4 thousand tons, which represents a 3.9% decrease compared to the previous year. Over the entire period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 7.5%, averaging an annual decline of 2.6%.

The 2020 volume marked a dramatic 659.4% gain compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2019, when exports dropped by 61.0%.

Exports bottomed out in 2018 at 23.2 million US dollars, then peaked in 2020 at 65.9 million US dollars, representing a 2.8-fold difference. The 2020 value showed a modest 1.1% increase compared to the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2018 with an 18.0% drop, while the most significant increase was recorded in 2019 with a 180.7% surge.
