Syria's market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts began the period at 24 696 t in 2018 but contracted to 23 513 t the following year. This decline was driven by severe drought in the Idlib region, coupled with rising production costs due to water scarcity and a higher US dollar exchange rate, which affected planting and harvests.

Despite the persistence of these climatic and economic challenges, groundnut production surged in 2020 and 2021, peaking at 35 826 t. This dramatic rise lifted the total market volume to 42 816 t in 2021. However, the market fell back to 24 875 t in 2022 before a modest recovery to 25 359 t in 2023, a shift partly supported by a government decision in August 2023 to ban the import of 20 agricultural products, a measure designed to empower local producers and reduce import dependency.

Syria produced 21,528 tonnes of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in 2020, marking a 40.9% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 35.1%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.5%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 15,284 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 10.1%.

In 2020, Syria exported 58 tonnes of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts, representing a significant 40.5% increase compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports surged by 1,328.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 142.7%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Turkey and Lebanon were the primary export markets for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts, together accounting for 93.1% of total export volumes. Other destinations held relatively smaller shares.

Export values showed an unstable trend from 2017 to 2020. After reaching a high in 2017, exports dropped to a low in 2019, with a 13.8-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Syria exported $75,000 worth of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts, a sharp increase of 1,094.6% from 2019.

From 2017 to 2020, Lebanon and Turkey were the two leading markets for exports in value terms, jointly representing 96.6% of total export revenue. The remaining exports were distributed among various other countries.

Imports in kind, t

Following two years of growth, imports of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts into Syria declined. In 2020, import volume stood at 5,438 tonnes, a 34.2% decrease year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 12.3%, with an average annual decline of 4.3%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 8,270 tonnes, while the largest increase occurred in 2018 at 24.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Sudan (38.2% of import volume), Turkey (21.1%), and China (15.0%) were the main sources of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts for Syria, together accounting for 74.3% of total imports.

In 2020, Syria imported $6,391,000 worth of these groundnuts, reflecting a 29.7% drop from the previous year. The peak import value was recorded in 2018 at $9,368,000, which also saw the largest increase of 47.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Sudan (31.0% of import value), Turkey (27.0%), and China (14.9%) were the primary suppliers of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts to Syria, jointly representing 72.9% of total import value.
