Earlier Report Observations

In 2018 and 2019, the market for not roasted and not cooked groundnuts in the Dominican Republic was shaped by contrasting forces. Domestic demand weakened as major processors like La Manicera halted purchases of local peanuts, while frequent droughts constrained yields. However, active government support through financing from Banco Agrícola and Instituto Agrario Dominicano, alongside presidential attention to peanut projects, encouraged planting. This contributed to production rising from 6 450 t in 2018 to 7 394 t in 2019, with market volume expanding from 7 210 t to 7 990 t.

Production fell to 6 190 t in 2020, reducing market volume to 6 562 t. A partial recovery followed in 2021, with output reaching 6 299 t and the market growing to 6 981 t, supported by a rebound in imports after a sharp drop the previous year.

From 2022, a key driver was the initiative by the Instituto del Tabaco (INTABACO) to promote high-yield peanut cultivation during the tobacco off-season, aiming to develop an export specialty. The entry of the Nicaraguan company Agroindustria Santa Luisa into crop rotation projects added technical cooperation. Production increased to 6 704 t in 2022 and further to 7 203 t in 2023, while market volume reached 8 282 t in 2023, with rising imports meeting additional demand.
