A sharp contraction followed, with the market falling to 177.6 thousand tons in 2022 and 166.3 thousand tons in 2023, primarily due to a 30% to 80% surge in import prices which suppressed consumption, despite ongoing import substitution efforts and the registration of new domestic groundnut varieties adapted to local conditions.

By 2024, import volumes showed a partial recovery to 148.4 thousand tons as large companies and traders reconfigured their logistics and supply routes, while sustained consumer demand for processed groundnut products and pastes with functional additives supported market activity.

Looking at the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 19%, with an average annual growth rate of 6.0%. The lowest production level was in 2018 at 34 249 tons, which also saw the largest decline of 12.8%. The most significant increase occurred in 2019, with production jumping by 23.5%.

The market showed notable fluctuations during this period. Exports reached their highest point in 2018 at 26.6 thousand tons, then dropped to their lowest in 2019 at 12.2 thousand tons, creating a 2.2-fold difference between these years. In 2020, CIS exports of not roasted and not cooked groundnuts recovered to 15.2 thousand tons, representing a substantial 24.2% increase from 2019. The largest decline was recorded in 2019 at 54.0%, while the biggest increase happened in 2018 with an 87.7% rise.

The top three markets—Afghanistan (32.6% of exports), Turkmenistan (7.8%), and Ukraine (5.4%)—together accounted for just 45.9% of total shipments.
