Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, production of not retail-packaged artificial filament yarn in Lithuania reached 2 917 tons, supported by investments in energy efficiency from key market players such as the Kaunas-based company 'Dirbtinis pluoštas', which commissioned its own gas power plant to reduce energy costs and maintain high-quality acetate yarn output. The domestic market volume stood at 1 433 tons that year. Production then contracted over the next two years, falling to 2 077 tons in 2019 and 2 158 tons in 2020, while the market volume shrank to 934 tons and 922 tons, respectively.

A sustained recovery in production began in 2021, rising to 3 187 tons and continuing its growth to reach 5 382 tons by 2024. This expansion period coincided with significant external factors; in 2022, producers faced the impact of global oil price volatility, which affected the cost base for synthetic polyester and demand patterns for acetate yarns. Furthermore, the implementation of EU Regulation 2018/848 on organic production and labeling from January 1, 2022, introduced new standards for ecological products applicable to the Lithuanian market. Despite rising output, the total domestic market volume in physical terms declined from 1 433 tons in 2018 to 650 tons in 2024, as a substantial portion of production was directed abroad, with exports increasing from 2 536 tons to 5 615 tons over the same period.

In value terms, the production value grew markedly from 16 225 thousand US dollars in 2018 to 45 386 thousand US dollars in 2024, reflecting both higher volumes and shifts in unit values. The market value exhibited volatility, peaking at 9 177 thousand US dollars in 2022 before decreasing to 6 894 thousand US dollars in 2024, influenced by the interplay of trade flows and changing cost structures within the industry.
