Earlier Report Observations

The market for not in shell eggs and egg yolks in Africa expanded from 45 561 t in 2018 to a peak of 57 759 t in 2020. This growth was primarily a recovery from the national egg shortage caused by the 2017 High Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) outbreak, which prompted a significant spike in imports of liquid and dried yolk products to meet demand. The introduction of a statutory levy on table eggs in 2018 provided sustained funding for industry marketing and development. While the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 disrupted export trade and supply chains, domestic production continued to increase, supporting the overall market volume.

A contraction began in 2021, with the market size falling to 45 243 t by 2023. This decline was driven by a series of production challenges. In 2022, import volumes dropped by 39% due to lower demand and high local prices, coinciding with a recovery in exports to regional markets. The most significant reduction occurred in 2023, when domestic production fell by 10.7% to its lowest level in over a decade, severely impacted by renewed HPAI outbreaks and escalating feed costs. This production crisis led to a sharp increase in consumer prices and a further decrease in import activity.
