Earlier Report Observations

The market for not filled chocolate bars in Slovakia grew from 5 959 t in 2018 to 6 746 t in 2019. This expansion was supported by increasing consumer interest in fairtrade products, which boosted demand for ethically sourced cocoa. The launch of new chocolate varieties, such as ruby chocolate by Barry Callebaut, alongside the expansion of domestic producers into new showrooms and foreign markets, broadened the product range and stimulated sales.

Market volume fell sharply to 4 971 t in 2020, primarily due to a global cocoa supply shortage. Unfavorable weather in key growing regions like Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire reduced harvests, leading to higher cocoa prices and lower product availability. Despite this contraction, consumer preferences continued to shift toward dark chocolate with high cocoa content and healthier, sugar-free alternatives.

In the following years, the market landscape was shaped by further regulatory and supply-side factors. Consumption of fairtrade cocoa in Slovakia rose by 65% in 2021, reflecting strong ethical demand. New food labeling rules effective from July 2022, along with announced future VAT increases on cocoa products, altered the operational environment for manufacturers. Global cocoa supply constraints and price pressures persisted through 2023, maintaining a focus on premium and high-cocoa segments.
