However, market volume contracted to 29 507 t in 2020, while the market value remained steady at around 132 million US dollars.

Market volume recovered to 32 057 t in 2021 and reached 33 908 t in 2022, with the market value rising to 152 million US dollars by 2022, indicating stronger pricing or a shift toward higher-value products.

In 2023, market volume stabilized at 33 820 t, but value jumped to 169 million US dollars as global cocoa supply tightened due to production shortfalls in West Africa and the anticipated impact of El Niño. The high price environment continued into 2024, driven by crop diseases and adverse weather in major producing countries like Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana.

Following two years of growth, Switzerland's production of not defatted cocoa paste declined. In 2020, the country produced 38 795 tonnes, marking a slight decrease of 0.7% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 14%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 4.5%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 39 053 tonnes, with the largest year-on-year increase of 9.7% also occurring that year.

Over the 2017-2020 period, export value rose by 7.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 65.620 million US dollars, which also experienced the largest decline of 14.2%.

In 2020, the country imported 8 926 tonnes, reflecting a substantial decrease of 16.6% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 5.3%, with a compound annual decline rate of 1.8%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 10 707 tonnes, while the largest year-on-year increase of 8.6% occurred in 2018.
