Earlier Report Observations

Market volume for non-wood fibre pulp in Asia experienced modest fluctuations between 2018 and 2023, ending the period slightly below its starting level. After a small increase to 12 710 thousand tons in 2019, consumption dipped to 12 451 thousand tons in 2020, then stabilized around 12 500 thousand tons in 2021-2022 before declining to 12 307 thousand tons in 2023.

This overall trend was driven by opposing movements in domestic production and trade. Production of non-wood fibre pulp fell from 10 098 thousand tons in 2018 to 9 732 thousand tons in 2023, with a notable drop in 2020. Meanwhile, imports more than compensated for the production decline, rising from 2 690 thousand tons to 4 285 thousand tons over the same period. However, a sharp increase in exports, from 204 thousand tons to 1 710 thousand tons, pulled net supply down and contributed to the market contraction.

By 2023, the Asian market for non-wood fibre pulp had become more reliant on imports, which accounted for a larger share of supply, while domestic output continued to trend downward. The net effect was a gradual reduction in total available volume despite strong inbound shipments.
