Earlier Report Observations

The market for non-coniferous wood fuel in the United Kingdom experienced substantial growth from 2018 to 2023, with volume expanding from 481.6 thousand cubic meters to 915.1 thousand cubic meters. This represented a near-doubling of market size over the five-year period. Growth was particularly strong between 2019 and 2020, when the market added over 210 thousand cubic meters.

The consistent increase in market volume was primarily driven by two opposing trends in trade. Imports of non-coniferous wood fuel rose sharply from 57.1 thousand cubic meters in 2018 to 348.5 thousand cubic meters in 2023. At the same time, exports fell from 188.0 thousand cubic meters to 46.4 thousand cubic meters over the same period. Domestic production remained relatively stable, fluctuating between 612 and 613 thousand cubic meters annually.

After the rapid expansion in 2020, the pace of market growth moderated. Annual increases slowed from over 7% in 2021 to around 4.5% in 2023. The overall trajectory, however, remained upward, resulting in a total market that was 90% larger in 2023 than it had been in 2018.
