Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, Kenya's non-coniferous wood fuel production remained stable at approximately 23.8 million cubic meters annually, supported by steady demand from the public sector and social institutions. In 2020, however, output fell to 22.5 million cubic meters. This decline coincided with the introduction of the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Strategy (KNEECS) and the Bioenergy Strategy 2020‑2027, both of which emphasized sustainable management of wood‑fuel resources and aimed at reducing household pollution from wood combustion.

After the 2020 contraction, the market stabilized in 2021 at 22.3 million cubic meters and then began a gradual recovery, reaching 22.5 million cubic meters in 2022 and 22.7 million cubic meters in 2023. This upward trend was reinforced by regulatory measures from the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA), which issued biofuel guidelines in 2022 and drafted comprehensive biofuels regulations in 2023 to structure production, blending, distribution, and sales. These steps provided a clearer framework for the wood‑fuel sector, while continued government promotion of bioenergy projects helped sustain demand from households and institutions.
