Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for non-coniferous wood fuel in Hungary fluctuated between 2.3 and 3.0 million cubic meters from 2018 to 2023. After reaching 2.7 million m³ in 2018, it declined to 2.4 million m³ in 2020. This drop was initially driven in 2019 by a reduction in supply due to decreased illegal logging and imports, which constrained wood availability. The following year, the COVID-19 pandemic further weakened the timber industry as businesses postponed investments and supply chain disruptions hampered trade, leading to an additional contraction.

Market volume rebounded sharply to 2.7 million m³ in 2021, largely due to government subsidies and social fuel programs that boosted demand, particularly in smaller settlements. However, in 2022, volume fell again to 2.3 million m³ as producers faced significant cost increases from rising energy prices and exchange rate movements, which led to higher market prices and reduced activity.

In 2023, the market recovered strongly, with volume jumping to 3.0 million m³, indicating a resurgence in consumption.
