The Swedish market for non-coniferous roundwood contracted significantly between 2018 and 2023. Total market volume fell from 12.1 million m³ in 2018 to 9.8 million m³ in 2023, a decline of nearly 20%. The most severe drop occurred in 2020, when the market shrank by 15% year-on-year to 10.3 million m³.

This overall reduction was driven by declining domestic production and lower imports. Production decreased from 9.3 million m³ in 2018 to 7.6 million m³ in 2023, while imports fell from 2.9 million m³ to 2.3 million m³ over the same period. Exports remained negligible and did not materially influence total market size.

Following the sharp contraction in 2020, the market stabilized briefly, with volumes holding around 10.5 million m³ in 2021 and 2022. However, the downward trend resumed in 2023, pushing the market volume below 10 million m³ for the first time in the observed period.

Sweden's non-coniferous roundwood production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, production reached 7 707 K m³, marking a significant 16.7% year-over-year decrease. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 11.9%, which translates to an average annual decline of 4.1%. The peak production was recorded in 2018 at 9 278 K m³, which also saw the largest annual increase of 6.0%.
