Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the German non-coniferous roundwood market contracted, with volume falling from 17.6 million m³ to 14.9 million m³. The initial high volume in 2018 was supported by increased harvesting activities due to bark beetle infestations, which boosted production and exports. The beetle outbreak continued to influence harvest and export volumes in 2019, while the market decline extended into 2020.

Market volume rebounded to 16.7 million m³ in 2021, driven by a record timber harvest that reached nearly 83 million solid cubic meters. Despite the beginning of a slowdown in the construction sector, the high harvest levels pushed market volume further up to 19.1 million m³ in 2022. However, the construction crisis deepened during this period, leading to a shortage of orders in the main construction trade and dampening demand for sawnwood.

In 2023, the market volume dropped back to 16.7 million m³ as the construction crisis persisted, restricting sales opportunities for the wood industry. Prices for softwood round timber rose due to scarce availability and low volumes of damaged wood. For 2024, factors such as a decline in timber harvesting and continued weakness in construction indicate ongoing market constraints, with roundwood availability tightening and prices for softwood round timber increasing.
