Local production of non-coniferous roundwood in French Polynesia increased consistently from 5 644 m³ in 2018 to 5 748 m³ in 2023. This gradual expansion was supported by the implementation of a normative framework in 2018 to facilitate the commercialization of local wood, alongside a long-term forest policy active since 1977 aimed at boosting domestic timber output and reducing import reliance.

Total market volume experienced significant variation, primarily due to fluctuating imports. Imports surged to 920 m³ in 2019, temporarily lifting the market size to 6 585 m³, before declining sharply in subsequent years. By 2023, with imports at zero, the market volume of 5 748 m³ was entirely supplied by domestic production.

The market saw regulatory and infrastructural developments in later years. In 2022, official clarification stated that tropical hardwoods are not classified as coniferous, affecting wood trading. The state-owned Société d'Exploitation de Bois Marquisienne secured a project in 2023 to build a new sawmill on Nuku Hiva Island, designed to triple local production capacity. Furthermore, public tenders for wooden housing construction issued in 2024 indicate continued government initiatives to stimulate demand for local timber.
