Earlier Report Observations

The market for non-coniferous roundwood in Finland reached its highest volume in 2018 at 18.8 million cubic meters, driven by peak demand from the forest industry and increasing use of wood for energy, with notably high prices for birch pulpwood and logs. After a decline in 2019, market volume stabilized and grew slightly in 2020 to 17.5 million cubic meters, as domestic wood consumption for energy production rose, offsetting moderate supply chain disruptions from the pandemic.

Purchases of industrial roundwood from private forests surged in 2021, contributing to a market rebound to 18.5 million cubic meters, accompanied by rising log prices. However, the market contracted sharply in 2022 to 14.8 million cubic meters and further to 14.1 million cubic meters in 2023, primarily due to the halt of wood imports from Russia, which drastically reduced import volumes despite an increase in domestic harvesting.

In 2024, roundwood trade activity strengthened, with industrial wood trade volumes reaching the second-highest level on record at 48.8 million cubic meters, only 5% below the 2018 peak. Prices for birch logs and pulpwood rose by 11% and 17-20% respectively, and imports from Latvia grew by 43%, while state-owned enterprises continued to play a significant role in supporting demand through forest industry investments.
