Between 2018 and 2020, the market for non-coniferous roundwood in China showed significant movement. The market volume reached 255.7 million cubic meters in 2018, supported by expanding consumption of imported wood and rising demand for deep-processed wood products. In 2019, the market contracted to 228.3 million cubic meters, a period during which the modified hardwood sector reported rapid growth and industry consolidation. A recovery followed in 2020, with volume rising to 243.4 million cubic meters, driven by technological advances in modified wood production and supportive industrial policies that encouraged market expansion.

From 2021 to 2023, the market stabilized around 242–244 million cubic meters. Government policies promoting green and high-performance wood products helped sustain demand during this period. By 2023, the market volume increased to 244.5 million cubic meters, bolstered by the rapid development of the particleboard industry, which entered a new phase of capacity growth and raised demand for wood raw materials.

In 2020, China produced 231.4 million cubic meters of non-coniferous roundwood, marking a moderate increase of 8.1% compared to the previous year. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 214.1 million cubic meters, while the peak occurred in 2018 with 238.2 million cubic meters. The most significant decline was observed in 2019, when production fell by 10.1%.

In 2020, the output was valued at 52 424 million US dollars, representing a limited drop of 3.2% year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, production decreased by 31%, which translates to an annualized rate of 11.6%.

Non-coniferous roundwood exports from China declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports stood at 29 thousand cubic meters, down by 52.7% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 69.3%, equating to an annualized rate of 32.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam remained the dominant partner for China's non-coniferous roundwood exports in volume terms, accounting for 87.4% of total flows, while other markets formed a long tail.

Non-coniferous roundwood exports from China declined for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 6 million US dollars, representing a 57.7% reduction year-over-year. Over the period 2017-2020, exports decreased by 78.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -40.1%.

Throughout 2017 to 2020, the partner structure for exports in value terms was centered on Vietnam, which accounted for 86.8% of total flows, while other markets formed a less significant perimeter.

Non-coniferous roundwood imports into China declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, China imported 12 108 thousand cubic meters, marking a notable drop of 16.9% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 30.2%, equating to an annualized rate of 11.3%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 17 797 thousand cubic meters. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with an 18.1% decrease, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 2.6%.

The structure of imports in volume terms from 2017 to 2020 can be described as diversified. Papua New Guinea (18.8% of imports), Russia (13.6%), and Solomon Islands (13.5%) together accounted for just 45.8% of total flows, with no single country holding a clearly dominant position.

Non-coniferous roundwood imports into China declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 2 937 million US dollars, decreasing by 22.5% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 38.5%, equating to an annualized rate of 15.0%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 5 199 million US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 27.1% drop, while the largest increase was in 2018 at 8.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the geographical structure of imports in value terms was highly diversified. Papua New Guinea (14.9% of imports), Solomon Islands (10.5%), and the United States (10.0%) together accounted for only 35.4% of total flows, while the remaining 64.6% was distributed among numerous smaller partner countries.
