Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the market volume for non-coniferous roundwood in the Central African Republic remained stable at around 2.8 million m³. This stability was underpinned by the state's priority on industrializing natural resources, including the timber sector, and the availability of extensive forest resources with over 87 million m³ of exploitable species. The 2009 Mining Code provided a legal framework for resource management, while local small-scale industry processed less noble species.

Beginning in 2022, the market volume started to decline, reaching 2.7 million m³ in 2023, which coincided with a rise in exports. This export growth was facilitated by government measures to improve the business climate, including the establishment of a sectoral coordination committee for economic governance and the facilitation of trade on the Douala-Bangui corridor. Concurrently, efforts to strengthen sustainable forest management and combat illegal exploitation, along with revisions to petroleum product prices affecting logistics, shaped the operating environment. However, persistent security challenges and high banking credit costs constrained sectoral capacities.

In 2024, the focus on sustainable forest resource governance continued, with awareness campaigns on waste management and new petroleum product pricing structures. Additionally, facilitated access to credit for micro-projects supported related sectors, while exports of non-coniferous roundwood further increased to 265 thousand m³.
