From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for non-coniferous roundwood in Austria declined from 3 798 thousand cubic meters to 3 534 thousand cubic meters. This contraction was primarily driven by weak export markets due to global economic uncertainty, which reduced external demand. Additionally, storm and snowbreak damage increased the supply of damaged wood, putting downward pressure on prices. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 further dampened demand and caused a sharp drop in roundwood prices, contributing to the market's decline in physical volume.

The market stabilized in 2021 at 3 516 thousand cubic meters, supported by strong domestic and international demand, particularly from China and the USA, which helped offset previous weaknesses. A reduction in calamity wood volumes allowed sawmills to process more roundwood. In 2022, the market rebounded sharply to 3 733 thousand cubic meters, with the market value surging to 799.2 million US dollars. This growth was fueled by the cessation of Russian wood exports, which drastically reduced global supply, and increased demand for oak due to supply chain disruptions from the Ukraine war.

In 2023, the market volume slightly increased to 3 752 thousand cubic meters, while the market value rose to 870.4 million US dollars, indicating continued firm demand and higher price levels following the supply constraints of the previous year.

Austria's production of non-coniferous roundwood has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 2 843 thousand cubic meters, marking a slight year-on-year decrease of 2.9%. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production fell by 6.8%, which translates to an average annual decline of 2.3%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 3 153 thousand cubic meters, with a 3.3% increase that year. However, the largest drop occurred in 2019, when production fell by 7.2%.

In 2020, the value of Austria's non-coniferous roundwood output reached 508.4 million US dollars, showing a solid year-on-year increase of 10.6%. Over the four-year span from 2017 to 2020, however, production value decreased by 7%, averaging an annual decline of 2.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 459.5 million US dollars, with a significant drop of 16.7% that year. In contrast, the peak value occurred in 2018, reaching 551.7 million US dollars.

Following two years of growth, Austria's exports of non-coniferous roundwood declined in 2020. Exports totaled 111.1 thousand cubic meters, which represents a 32.5% decrease compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 20.2%, with an average annual decline of 7.2%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 164.6 thousand cubic meters. The largest increase occurred in 2018, with exports rising by 9.1%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Italy, Czechia, and Hungary emerged as the primary markets for Austria's non-coniferous roundwood exports in volume terms. Italy accounted for 58.7% of exports, followed by Czechia at 8.1% and Hungary at 8.0%. Together, these three countries represented 74.7% of total export flows.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, export value decreased by 20.3%, averaging an annual decline of 7.3%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 26 549 thousand US dollars, with a 6.5% increase that year.
