The South-eastern Asian newsprint market began the period at 927 thousand tons in 2018, supported by established manufacturers such as PT. Aspex Kumbong and IKPP. Volume then dipped to 888 thousand tons in 2019.

A temporary recovery lifted the market to 963 thousand tons in 2020, but a sustained decline followed, bringing volume down to 705 thousand tons by 2022.

In 2023, market volume rebounded to 744 thousand tons. This increase was linked to the region's e-commerce boom, which boosted demand for newsprint in packaging and printing.

Newsprint production in South-eastern Asia fell for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 815.5 K t of newsprint, which was 3.9% lower than in 2019. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production dropped by 5.5%, averaging an annual decline of 1.9%. The highest output was recorded in 2018 at 869.9 K t, with the largest year-on-year increase of 0.8% also occurring that year.

Exports newsprint from South-eastern Asia

Exports in kind, K t

Newsprint exports from South-eastern Asia decreased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 37.6 K t, a sharp decline of 72.6% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 81%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -42.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, no single market dominated newsprint exports from South-eastern Asia. India accounted for 25.9% of exports in kind, Hong Kong for 6.2%, and China for 5.3%, together making up just 37.4% of total exports. The remaining share was distributed among numerous smaller partners, each with modest individual contributions.

Foreign newsprint supplies from South-eastern Asia declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region exported newsprint worth 33.1 M $ US, a decrease of 60.0% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports dropped by 71.3%, averaging an annual decline of 34.0%. The peak value was recorded in 2018 at 127.5 M $ US, with the largest year-on-year increase of 10.5% also occurring that year.

Over the 2017-2020 period, India, Hong Kong, and China were the largest buyers of newsprint from South-eastern Asia in value terms, but they did not dominate the market. India accounted for 24.7% of exports in value, Hong Kong for 6.4%, and China for 4.7%, together representing 35.9% of total exports. The majority of exports, 64.1%, went to a wide range of smaller partners.

Imports newsprint to South-eastern Asia

After two years of decline, newsprint imports into South-eastern Asia increased in 2020. Imports reached 185.3 K t, a modest rise of 4.9% compared to 2019. However, over the 2017-2020 period, imports fell by 38.9%, averaging an annual decline of 15.2%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 176.6 K t, with the largest year-on-year drop of 26.3% occurring in 2018.

From 2017 to 2020, South Korea, Canada, and France were among the top suppliers of newsprint to South-eastern Asia in kind. South Korea accounted for 17.8% of imports, Canada for 9.1%, and France for 8.4%, together making up only 35.3% of total imports. This indicates a highly diversified import structure, with many other partners contributing the remaining share.

Newsprint shipments to South-eastern Asia from abroad fell for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 102.4 M $ US, down by 24.8% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 44.8%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -18.0%.

An analysis of imports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 reveals a broad distribution across many markets. South Korea accounted for 18.0% of imports in value, Canada for 9.7%, and France for 8.8%, together representing just 36.6% of total imports. The remaining 63.4% was spread across numerous other partners, highlighting the region's diversified sourcing strategy.
