Earlier Report Observations

The newsprint market in Southern Europe contracted sharply between 2018 and 2022, with total volume falling from 1.33 million tonnes to 704 thousand tonnes. The steepest decline occurred in 2020, when the market size dropped by 39% to 759 thousand tonnes.

Industry dynamics in 2021 were influenced by a rise in printing and writing paper production in Brazil, affecting global pulp and fiber supply, while Italy's strong paper recycling sector continued to shape raw material streams for newsprint. In 2022, the market was directly pressured by a significant increase in energy and raw material costs in Italy, which raised production expenses. This coincided with a 32.2% decline in print newspaper sales in Italy from 2018 to 2022, reducing core demand for newsprint.

A modest recovery followed in 2023, with market volume growing 4.6% to 736 thousand tonnes, signaling a period of stabilization after years of decline.
