The decline continued into 2022, exacerbated by global supply chain disruptions and harvest yield fluctuations in Europe, which constrained truffle availability and affected prices across the region.

A turnaround began in 2023 as market volume grew to 354.1 thousand tons, fueled by a shift in consumer preference toward organic and fresh produce. South Mill Champs reinforced this growth by acquiring Baird Produce to expand its distribution network in Florida. Moving into 2024, major players introduced innovations: Phillips Mushroom Farms launched a 4-ounce organic white sliced mushroom product for smaller households, while Monterey Mushrooms debuted sustainable packaging made from 100% post-consumer recycled content, and investments advanced in cold storage facilities to preserve freshness.

In the Americas, mushroom and truffle production has declined for the third year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 502.9 thousand tonnes, marking a slight year-over-year contraction of 2.6%. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 7.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of -2.6%.

After two years of decline, mushroom and truffle production in the Americas increased in value. In 2020, output was valued at 1 477 million US dollars, showing a modest advance of 5.6% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production value decreased by 3.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of -1.1%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 1 399 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 7.4%.

Mushroom and truffle exports from the Americas have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region exported 99 646 tonnes, which is 3.6% higher than the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 56.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 16.1%.

In 2020, exports totalled 292.6 million US dollars, representing a strong improvement of 12.2% over the past year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 63.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 17.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Japan was the single largest buyer of mushrooms and truffles from the Americas, accounting for 2.3% of total exports in value terms.

Imports reached their lowest point in 2018 at 6 822 tonnes, then peaked in 2017, showing a fluctuation of 3.7 times between these years. In 2020, imports in the Americas reached 7 440 tonnes, down by 14.5% compared to the previous year. The largest decline was recorded in 2018 at 72.8%, while the largest increase occurred in 2019 at 27.5%.

Mushroom and truffle imports in the Americas declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports were recorded at 50.3 million US dollars, which is 3.5% lower compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value increased by 30.8%, with a compound annual growth rate of 9.4%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 52.8 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 37.1%.

The analysis of imports in value terms from 2017 to 2020 shows a broad distribution across many markets. South Korea (12.2% of imports), China (4.3% of imports), and Italy (2.3% of imports) together accounted for only 18.8% of total flows, with a significant 81.2% falling on other partners.
