In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains, impacting imports, yet the market volume reached 5 053 t, and new yarn segments with special properties emerged.

Market volume grew by 25% to 6 331 t in 2021, driven by the implementation of new EU textile labeling and traceability rules, which required packaging adaptations, and by investments in cleaner production technologies in response to environmental demands. Growth continued to 6 821 t in 2022 despite rising raw material and logistics costs, supported by ongoing investments in new segments such as bio-based yarn and pollution-reduction technologies that expanded product ranges and demand.

In 2023, market volume fell by 23% to 5 272 t, coinciding with preparations for the upcoming fire safety norms P118/1-2025 scheduled for 2025, which necessitated infrastructure adaptation costs. However, the market recovered to 6 484 t in 2024, a 23% increase, as companies adjusted to the impending regulations and continued to develop high-value-added products using modern technologies, despite persistent rises in raw material and energy costs.

Romania's exports of multiple or cabled synthetic yarn rebounded in 2020 after two years of decline. The country exported 243 tonnes, marking a 16.1% increase compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 2.8%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 0.9%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 209 tonnes, while the most significant decline occurred in 2018 with a drop of 10.4%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey were the top destinations for Romania's exports of multiple or cabled synthetic yarn in volume terms. Hungary accounted for 29.6% of exports, Bulgaria for 21.7%, and Turkey for 18.5%. Together, these three countries represented 69.9% of total export flows.

In value terms, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Turkey were the leading destinations for Romania's exports of multiple or cabled synthetic yarn from 2017 to 2020. Hungary held a 28.5% share, Bulgaria 23.3%, and Turkey 15.0%. Combined, these three countries accounted for 66.8% of total export value.
