In 2023, the market volume showed a modest recovery, increasing by 3.9% to 4 592 tons. In value terms, the market followed a similar pattern, dropping from 239.5 million USD in 2021 to 199.9 million USD in 2022, before edging up to 209.1 million USD in 2023.

By 2024, several developments began influencing the market landscape. New technological offerings entered the scene, such as RGB-LED rear combination lamps with full-color animations introduced by Forvia Hella, and software-controlled exterior lighting solutions from Marelli with dynamic animations and over-the-air updates. Regulatory changes also came into effect, including a tightened road traffic ordinance from March 1, 2024, with stricter speed limits, and new requirements for daytime running lights to activate automatically when the engine is running. Furthermore, growing consumer preference for electric vehicles, which reached a market share of around 15.3% in mid-2024, supported demand for advanced lighting systems integrated with ADAS technologies.

Austria's motor vehicle lighting exports declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 15 728 tonnes, marking a 12.3% decrease from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 12.4%, which translates to an average annual decline of 4.3%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 18 411 tonnes, with the largest year-on-year increase of 2.5% also occurring that year.

From 2017 to 2020, Germany was the primary destination for Austria's motor vehicle lighting exports in kind, accounting for 61.3% of the total. Slovakia followed with 8.2%, and Belgium with 5.6%. Together, these three countries represented 75.0% of all export flows during this period.

Austria's foreign motor vehicle lighting supplies in value terms dropped for the second consecutive year. In 2020, export value amounted to 564.6 million US dollars, showing a sharp decline of 19.0% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports decreased by 25.7%, averaging an annual reduction of 9.4%. The peak value was in 2018 at 782.7 million US dollars, with the largest increase of 3.1% also recorded that year.
