Earlier Report Observations

Between 2021 and 2024, the Romanian market for milling industry machinery experienced considerable volatility. The market size dropped from 17.3 million USD in 2021 to 8.5 million USD in 2022, a decline largely attributed to rising raw material and utility costs that pressured the food processing sector and dampened investment in new equipment. Subsequently, the market stabilized and grew slightly to 8.6 million USD in 2023 and 8.9 million USD in 2024. This recovery was underpinned by increased net grain exports, which sustained demand for milling machinery, and broader global trends toward advanced mechanization and automation in agriculture.

Domestic production of milling machinery rose from 632 thousand USD in 2021 to 913 thousand USD in 2022 before falling sharply to 278 thousand USD in 2023. The earlier increase coincided with heightened farmer demand for productivity-enhancing equipment and export activity by local manufacturer IRUM. The subsequent production drop occurred alongside a European-wide slowdown in sales of medium-power agricultural machinery, though demand for small machinery grew due to legislative changes allowing non-professional operators to register such equipment. Throughout the period, the National Research and Development Institute for Machines and Installations for Agriculture and Food Industry (INMA) played a key role in technology transfer and R&D, securing funding in 2024 for further projects in agricultural machinery design.
