The millet market in Eastern Asia expanded from 2.4 million tonnes in 2018 to nearly 3 million tonnes in 2021, driven by rising production volumes during this period. This upward trend was interrupted in 2022 when the market size contracted to 2.7 million tonnes, a drop of about 9% from the previous year's peak. By 2023, the market stabilized at 2.7 million tonnes, showing only a marginal increase.

Production of millet, which forms the bulk of market supply, followed a similar pattern, reaching 3 million tonnes in 2021 before declining in 2022. Imports and exports remained relatively small throughout the years, having a limited effect on the overall market volume.

Eastern Asia's millet export volume increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 6 579 thousand US dollars, showing a strong increase of 23.7% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 34.3%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.3%. The lowest value was recorded in 2018 at 3 809 thousand US dollars, with the largest decline that year at 22.2%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, rising by 39.7%.

After a two-year decline, Eastern Asia's millet import volume increased. In 2020, imports stood at 15 528 tonnes, representing a 15.3% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 43.6%, with an average annual decline of 17.4%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 13 465 tonnes, with the largest decline in 2018 at 44.9%.
