Market volume surged to 8.6 million tons in 2021 and peaked at 11.1 million tons in 2022, coinciding with a sharp rise in import volumes. However, in 2023 the market fell back to 6.7 million tons as imports declined substantially.

Eastern Africa's production of milled rice and broken rice has declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the region produced 2,913 thousand tonnes, marking a 7.3% decrease from the previous year. Looking at the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 19.8%, which translates to an average annual increase of 6.2%. The highest production level was achieved in 2018, reaching 3,181 thousand tonnes, with the largest year-over-year increase of 30.8% also occurring that year.

Exports milled rice and broken rice from Eastern Africa

After two years of growth, Eastern Africa's exports of milled rice and broken rice fell in 2020. Exports totaled 114 thousand tonnes, a 39.0% drop compared to 2019. The peak export volume was recorded in 2019 at 187 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 48.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, the Democratic Republic of the Congo was the leading destination for Eastern Africa's exports of milled rice and broken rice in volume terms, accounting for 42.2% of total exports.

In 2020, Eastern Africa's imports of milled rice and broken rice in volume terms stood at 3,377 thousand tonnes, a 7.5% increase from the previous year. The lowest import volume was in 2019 at 3,141 thousand tonnes, while the highest was in 2018 at 4,198 thousand tonnes. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 25.2% drop, and the largest increase was in 2018 with a 24.4% rise.

Between 2017 and 2020, India, Pakistan, and Thailand were the main suppliers of milled rice and broken rice to Eastern Africa in volume terms. India accounted for 40.9% of imports, Pakistan for 30.5%, and Thailand for 9.4%, together representing 80.8% of total import volume.
