Earlier Report Observations

The Asian market for milled and broken rice experienced notable fluctuations in volume between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 414.5 million tons in 2018, the market contracted significantly to 401.7 million tons in 2019 before recovering to 409.2 million tons in 2020. It then reached a high of 418.7 million tons in 2021, dipped again to 410.6 million tons in 2022, and finished the period at a peak of 423.6 million tons in 2023.

These movements were closely tied to changes in regional production and trade. Domestic output fell from 419.7 million tons in 2018 to 409.3 million tons in 2019, contributing to the market decline that year. Production subsequently recovered and grew to 427.8 million tons by 2023. Concurrently, imports varied from a low of 7.5 million tons in 2019 to a high of 13.2 million tons in 2021, while exports remained relatively stable, ranging between 14.8 and 17.5 million tons over the period.

The market's highest volume in 2023 was supported by strong production of 427.8 million tons and imports of 10.6 million tons, coupled with a lower export volume of 14.8 million tons. Over the entire six-year span, the net result was a market expansion of 9.1 million tons from the 2018 level.
