Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for milk and cream in Middle Africa declined from 1 151 тыс. т in 2018 to 1 067 тыс. т in 2020. This contraction was partly triggered by the 2018 recall of Lactalis infant milk products in Cameroon due to salmonella contamination in France, which eroded consumer confidence and led to tighter sanitary regulations affecting the dairy sector.

From 2021 onward, the market recovered, reaching 1 128 тыс. т in 2023. This turnaround coincided with Cameroon's import substitution policy, supported by IMF-backed economic reforms from 2021 to 2024, which boosted local milk production. Domestic output rose from 1 030 тыс. т in 2020 to 1 104 тыс. т in 2023, while imports fell sharply over the same period.

By 2024, the government reinforced this trend through a national tender for artificial insemination and milking equipment aimed at further increasing dairy production. Meanwhile, product diversification with vitamin‑fortified options and the expansion of e‑commerce platforms improved consumer access and variety in the milk and cream market.
