From 2018 to 2019, the German metal keys market expanded, reaching 1 326 tons in 2019. This growth was driven by increased demand from the automotive and construction industries, along with the entry of new suppliers, particularly from China. However, in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused production halts and supply chain disruptions, leading to a sharp drop in market volume to 901 tons.

A partial recovery occurred in 2021, with market volume rising to 1 029 tons, supported by growing demand for light metals and aluminum closures in the food and beverage sector. Yet, in 2022, the market declined again to 884 tons due to rising prices for strategic metals and tighter regulatory requirements, such as new occupational safety and hazardous substances regulations.

The downward trend continued in 2023, with volume falling to 696 tons as new EU machinery and product safety regulations imposed additional burdens on manufacturers. In 2024, the market remained under pressure, decreasing to 665 tons, influenced by persistent high raw material costs and the implementation of the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act.
