Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2023, the Saint Lucian market for fresh melons and papayas showed notable volatility in volume. After a slight increase to 868 tonnes in 2019, the total market size contracted sharply over the next two years, falling to 661 tonnes in 2020 and then to 457 tonnes in 2021. This decline represented a reduction of nearly 50% from the 2019 peak and was driven by a concurrent drop in both domestic production and imports.

The market began a partial recovery from 2022 onward, with volume rising to 495 tonnes that year and reaching 568 tonnes in 2023. This growth was supported by a rebound in local production, which increased from 397 tonnes in 2021 to 510 tonnes in 2023. Imports, however, remained significantly below their pre-2020 levels throughout the recovery period.
