Colombian watermelon production expanded sharply from 159 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 248 thousand tonnes in 2019. This growth was supported by favorable government policies for farmers and beneficial climatic conditions for cultivation. At the same time, rising health awareness and an increase in vegan restaurants in metropolitan areas boosted consumer demand for fresh fruits, including watermelons.

The market contracted to 227 thousand tonnes in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and altered consumer spending toward essential goods, while rising prices for agricultural inputs squeezed production margins. A slight recovery followed in 2021, reaching 232 thousand tonnes, driven by sustained consumer preference for fresh and healthy products. However, production fell again to 220 thousand tonnes in 2022 amid global inflationary pressures and higher logistics costs, which reduced affordability and shifted consumer focus to basic necessities.

Output stabilized around 218 thousand tonnes in 2023. During this period, greater industry emphasis on sustainability, traceability, and the opening of new market segments helped maintain domestic activity, even as international competition intensified. Marketing strategies increasingly promoted local origin, freshness, and convenient formats to meet evolving consumer preferences.

Colombia produced 227.5 thousand tons of watermelons in 2020, marking a modest 8.4% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 19.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 6.2%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 159.0 thousand tons, which represented a significant 16.4% decline. In contrast, 2019 saw the highest output at 248.2 thousand tons, reflecting a substantial 56.1% increase.

Colombia's watermelon export revenues have increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports totaled 596.7 thousand US dollars, rising by 42.9% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, export revenues grew by 284 062.2%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1 316.4%.
