The market decline in 2024 was shaped by global geopolitical tensions and fluctuations in energy commodity markets, which increased production costs and dampened demand. Concurrently, regulatory adjustments at the European and national levels impacted industrial production and distribution frameworks for materials like MDF, contributing to the downturn.

Production MDF in Italy

In 2019, Italy's MDF production reached its lowest value at 329.4 million US dollars. The following year, in 2020, output surged by 30.9% to 431.1 million US dollars. The peak was recorded earlier in 2018 at 538.4 million US dollars, with the largest decline of 38.8% occurring in 2019.

Exports MDF from Italy

Exports in kind, K m³

The market showed an unstable trend from 2017 to 2019, with a peak-to-trough amplitude of 2.4 times. In 2019, MDF exports from Italy hit their lowest point at 126 thousand cubic meters, marking a significant decline of 55.5%. By 2020, exports rebounded sharply, increasing by 91.1% to 240 thousand cubic meters.

From 2017 to 2020, Tunisia, Slovenia, and Algeria were the largest buyers of MDF from Italy in volume terms, accounting for 20.8%, 10.7%, and 9.5% of exports, respectively. Together, they represented 41.0% of total exports, with many smaller partners making up the remainder.

In 2019, Italy's MDF exports in value terms were at their minimum of 76.1 million US dollars, reflecting a decline of 39.2%. The peak occurred in 2018 at 125.2 million US dollars. By 2020, exports recovered, rising by 42.6% to 108.6 million US dollars.

Between 2017 and 2020, Italy's MDF exports in value terms were distributed across numerous countries. Germany, Tunisia, and Slovenia were the top destinations, contributing 14.2%, 10.1%, and 6.0% of exports, respectively. Their combined share totaled 30.3% of the overall flows.

Imports MDF to Italy

Imports in kind, K m³

Italy's MDF imports in volume terms peaked in 2019 at 1 051 thousand cubic meters, showing a substantial increase of 42.5%. However, after this two-year uptick, imports declined in 2020 to 630 thousand cubic meters, a drop of 40.1% compared to the previous year. Over the entire 2017–2020 period, imports decreased by 8.6%, averaging an annual decline of 2.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Romania, and Slovenia were the leading sources of MDF imports to Italy in volume terms, with shares of 26.5%, 18.1%, and 11.8%, respectively. Together, they accounted for 56.4% of total imports.

Italy's MDF imports in value terms reached their highest point in 2018 at 254.9 million US dollars, following an increase of 15.1%. In 2019, imports fell by 20.4% to a lower level. The decline continued into 2020, with imports dropping by 10.4% to 181.8 million US dollars. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, imports decreased by 17.9%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 6.4%.

During 2017–2020, Germany, France, and Romania played significant but not dominant roles as suppliers of MDF to Italy in value terms, with shares of 16.7%, 15.1%, and 13.8%, respectively. Their combined contribution made up 45.6% of total imports.
