The French MDF market volume began the period at 1.3 million cubic meters in 2018 before contracting to 1.1 million cubic meters by 2019. Consumption recovered to 1.2 million cubic meters in 2020, a year marked by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which created reported challenges for specific segments such as MDF mouldings.

After a marginal decrease to 1.2 million cubic meters in 2021, the market entered a phase of severe contraction, plummeting to 756 thousand cubic meters in 2022 and then to 533 thousand cubic meters in 2023. This steep decline was primarily driven by government-imposed economic restrictions that dampened industrial activity and, more significantly, a major downturn in the home renovation sector—a key driver of MDF demand—which recorded a 16.4% drop in volume between 2021 and 2024.

Recent market dynamics are being influenced by manufacturer innovation focused on enhancing product features like moisture resistance and durability, alongside evolving consumer preferences that favor minimalist design trends and greater emphasis on energy efficiency in building materials.

France's MDF production declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 751 K m³ of MDF, marking a significant 16.4% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 32.2%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -12.2%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 19.0%, while the smallest change was in 2018, with no growth recorded.

Exports MDF from France

Exports in kind, K m³

MDF exports from France increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports reached 814 K m³, up 65.5% year-on-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports grew by 62.1%, with a CAGR of 17.5%. The lowest export volume was in 2018, at 367 K m³, which also saw the largest decline of 27.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium, Italy, and Spain were the main buyers of MDF from France, accounting for 31.3%, 23.3%, and 17.2% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, they comprised 71.8% of total exports in kind.

The market showed an unstable trend during this period. The lowest value was recorded in 2019, at 130.1 million US dollars, while the highest was in 2020, at 224.2 million US dollars, representing a peak-to-trough ratio of 1.7 times. In 2020, cross-border shipments of MDF from France totaled 224.2 million US dollars, a sharp 72.3% increase compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 22.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium, Italy, and Spain continued to lead as the top buyers of MDF from France in value terms, with shares of 26.3%, 24.0%, and 18.7%, respectively. Collectively, they accounted for 69.1% of total exports in value.

MDF imports into France increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 1 244 K m³, showing a sharp 76.5% gain compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports rose by 149%, with a CAGR of 35.5%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Germany, Belgium, and Spain were the main suppliers of MDF to France, representing 45.4%, 23.0%, and 7.7% of imports in kind, respectively. Together, they made up 76.2% of total imports in kind.

MDF imports into France increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports amounted to 570.2 million US dollars, equivalent to a 103.6% uptick compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 139.6%, with a CAGR of 33.8%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Belgium, Germany, and Austria formed the key group of partners for MDF imports into France in value terms, with shares of 35.6%, 31.6%, and 10.2%, respectively. Jointly, they represented 77.4% of total import flows.
