Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2022, the physical market volume for mandarins, clementines, tangelos and citrus hybrids in China increased from 18 441 thousand tons to 26 425 thousand tons. This expansion was supported by the national rural revitalization strategy, which promoted county-level prosperous industries and new rural formats, along with local government plans for citrus industry restructuring and regional layout optimization. Enhanced prevention and control of diseases like citrus greening helped maintain orchard productivity.
After reaching a peak in 2022, the market volume stabilized at 26 064 thousand tons in 2023, with a marginal decline of less than 2%. Climate and disease pressures in several production areas constrained output, while the industry also faced structural overcapacity. At the same time, adjustments to import quarantine policies for frozen fruits lowered entry barriers, increasing competitive pressure on the domestic market.
In value terms, the market rose to 36 723 million USD in 2021 before decreasing to 26 888 million USD in 2023. The earlier increase was partly driven by accelerated brand building and growing consumer interest in healthier processed citrus products, while later price volatility reflected supply-demand imbalances and the effects of homogeneous variety planting on market prices.
