Maize starch market in Spain

Spanish maize starch production showed initial growth, reaching over 505 thousand tonnes in 2021, which helped lift the domestic market volume to a peak of 381 thousand tonnes the same year. After 2021, however, output declined steadily, dropping to 371 thousand tonnes in 2024 and pulling market volume down to 305 thousand tonnes.

Import volumes remained relatively stable around 22 thousand tonnes annually until 2020, then began to climb sharply, doubling to over 48 thousand tonnes by 2023-2024. Exports, in contrast, were volatile: after peaking at 151 thousand tonnes in 2021, they fell markedly to 104 thousand tonnes in 2023 before a partial recovery in 2024.

In value terms, the market exhibited stronger swings. Despite flat volume growth after 2021, the market's value surged from 154.9 million USD in 2021 to 226.3 million USD in 2022, reflecting considerable unit price increases. By 2024, however, the market value had retreated to 178.1 million USD, aligning with lower volume and adjusted pricing.

After two consecutive years of growth, Spain's maize starch production value declined. In 2019, output reached its peak at 186.8 million US dollars. However, in 2020, production fell to 171.4 million US dollars, marking an 8.3% decrease from the previous year. The most significant increase occurred in 2018, when production rose by 9.2%.

Following two years of growth, Spain's maize starch production volume declined. In 2019, production peaked at 493.2 thousand tonnes. In 2020, output dropped to 467.1 thousand tonnes, representing a 5.3% decrease from the previous year. The largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 6.7%. Over the entire 2017-2020 period, production grew by 5.4%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 1.8%.

Maize starch exports from Spain declined for the second consecutive year. In 2018, exports reached their highest level at 147.0 thousand tonnes. In 2019, they fell by 6.2%, followed by a further 2.9% decrease in 2020 to 133.9 thousand tonnes. The largest increase occurred in 2018, when exports rose by 9.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Portugal, and the United Kingdom formed the main export markets for Spain's maize starch in volume terms. France accounted for 45.5% of exports, Portugal for 27.8%, and the United Kingdom for 6.4%. Together, these three countries represented 79.7% of Spain's total maize starch exports.

After two years of growth, Spain's maize starch export value declined. In 2019, exports reached their peak at 58,375 thousand US dollars. In 2020, they fell slightly to 57,823 thousand US dollars, a 0.9% decrease from the previous year. The largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 7.7%. Over the 2017-2020 period, export value increased by 8.9%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 2.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, France, Portugal, and the United Kingdom remained the top buyers of Spanish maize starch in value terms. Imports maize starch to Spain

After two years of decline, Spain's maize starch import volume stabilized. In 2019, imports reached their lowest point at 21.8 thousand tonnes. In 2020, they increased slightly to 21.9 thousand tonnes, showing minimal change from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2018, when imports fell by 10.1%. Over the 2017-2020 period, import volume decreased by 18.8%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 6.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Portugal, France, and Belgium were the primary suppliers of maize starch to Spain in volume terms. Portugal accounted for 41.0% of imports, France for 20.4%, and Belgium for 9.5%. Together, these three countries supplied 70.9% of Spain's total maize starch imports.

In 2020, they rose to 13,604 thousand US dollars, marking a 2.5% increase from the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019, when import value fell by 11.0%. Over the 2017-2020 period, import value decreased by 10.9%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 3.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Portugal, France, and Germany played the leading roles in Spain's maize starch imports in value terms.
