After a stable period in 2018-2019 with a slight dip, the Austrian maize starch market expanded to 553.8 thousand tons in 2020. This growth was supported by low fertilizer prices in mid-2020, which encouraged farmers to apply more fertilizer, likely improving corn yields and raw material availability for starch production. The upward trend continued into 2021, peaking at 577.6 thousand tons.

However, the market contracted to 526.6 thousand tons in 2022, coinciding with elevated fertilizer prices by the end of 2021 that raised corn cultivation costs and pressured starch production. The decline accelerated in 2023, with market volume falling to 506.0 thousand tons, directly linked to a reported 17.7% drop in industrial corn processing for starch and citric acid during the 2023/2024 season.
