Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the domestic maize market volume in Croatia contracted from 1.67 million tons to 1.29 million tons. During the initial year, maize was supported by its diverse industrial applications, including a multi-fold expansion in bioethanol production.

Market volume fell sharply to 876 thousand tons in 2022, as production became more challenging due to climate change. The introduction of a new state agricultural land law that year missed the opportunity to accelerate development by not mandating the return of abandoned land to cultivation. Meanwhile, Bc Institut launched new generations of higher-yielding maize hybrids adapted to these changing conditions.

Production rebounded strongly in 2023, growing by 21.3% and pushing market volume up to 1.22 million tons. In 2024, grain maize production increased further, though drought and the emergence of mycotoxins affected crop quality and prices. The agricultural institute Poljinos placed six new hybrids on the market, while producers contended with low prices driven by high supply and competition from Italy and Ukraine.
