In 2024, the Saudi Water Authority initiated advanced technology projects designed to extract high-purity minerals, including magnesium, from desalination backwater. These initiatives aim to generate added value through sustainable practices like zero liquid discharge and renewable energy integration, marking a development intended to influence future local magnesium supply.

Between 2017 and 2020, production fell by 19.2%, which translates to an average annual decline of 6.9%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 326.0 thousand tons, with the largest year-on-year increase of 7.9% also occurring that year.
