Earlier Report Observations

The lithium carbonate market in Germany expanded from 26 685 tons in 2019 to 29 799 tons in 2020, driven by accelerating demand for lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles and energy storage systems. This surge triggered a strong price rally for lithium carbonate starting mid-2020.

Following 2020, the market encountered tightening global supply shortages, which peaked in 2023, while a demand slump in China led to a sharp price correction. German chemical companies such as Lanxess secured lithium carbonate at preferential prices. By 2024, market volume had declined to 24 384 tons, accompanied by lower imports.

The period also saw the rise of local lithium extraction projects, such as EnBW's initiative in Bruchsal, and the implementation of the EU Battery Regulation in 2024, which introduced carbon footprint labeling requirements for batteries.
