In 2023, the European Commission proposed a ban on dental amalgam from 2025, a move supported by the European Council in early 2024. Concurrently, major manufacturer SDI announced it would cease amalgam production by 2028. Furthermore, from 2024, German statutory health insurers began covering the costs of mercury-free dental fillings, accelerating the transition away from mercury-based products and reducing market demand.
