Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2019, the liquid egg market volume in Sub-Saharan Africa increased by over 9 000 metric tons, reaching 53 313 t. This expansion was primarily driven by the adoption of contract farming, which allowed small-scale producers to focus on egg production while larger integrators managed marketing and distribution. The growing processing of eggs into liquid and powdered forms also supported market growth by improving product shelf life and ease of transportation. In 2019, rising imports from Uganda added to overall supply, although they intensified price competition for local farmers.

From 2021 onward, the market entered a period of contraction. Government interventions to control egg imports, aimed at protecting domestic producers, significantly reduced inbound shipments. Simultaneously, rapidly increasing poultry feed costs—which account for 60–70% of production expenses—forced farmers to cut flock sizes and reduce output, leading to shortages. These supply constraints, coupled with shifting consumer behavior toward purchasing smaller quantities and a growing interest in processed liquid eggs for their longer shelf life, contributed to a decline in market volume, which fell to 42 916 t by 2023.
