Supermarket policies, such as Countdown's and Foodstuffs' commitments to cage-free eggs by 2025 and 2027 respectively, began reshaping supply chains from as early as 2017, leading to shortages and price increases that incentivized greater import volumes.

A sharp contraction occurred in 2022 when the battery-caged egg ban took effect, reducing domestic production and contributing to a market size drop to 645 tonnes. Simultaneously, global feed cost increases exacerbated by disrupted grain flows from Ukraine raised production expenses, further tightening supply and pushing prices higher.

The market rebounded in 2023, reaching 1 020 tonnes, as imports surged to fill the gap and layer hen numbers started to recover. Ongoing supermarket commitments, like Woolworths' move to sell only cage-free eggs in the North Island by end-2024, continued to influence production methods and market access, while consumer demand for ethically produced eggs remained strong.
