Earlier Report Observations

The Brazilian linseed market volume showed significant variability from 2018 to 2023, reaching a peak of 10 676 t in 2021. This trajectory was shaped by the expansion of cultivation areas, which supported domestic production, and by imports that remained crucial for price benchmarking in the local market. The introduction of a higher-yielding, disease-resistant linseed variety in 2019 marked a step toward improving long-term productivity, though market volume dipped that year amid cautious farmer behavior linked to climatic uncertainties.

Strong global demand and record worldwide production in 2020–2021 spurred Brazilian imports and pushed the market to its highest level. Tight global supply conditions in 2022 then restricted import volumes, causing a contraction in overall market size despite stable local output. By 2023, changing consumer habits became evident as linseed gained wider shelf space in supermarkets and stores across Brazil, reflecting rising demand for health-oriented foods and contributing to a recovery in import-driven market volume to 9 144 t.
