Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2020, the market volume for lettuce and chicory in Bolivia grew from 18 292 t to 18 536 t. This increase coincided with the launch of family-run hydroponic lettuce ventures, such as Ecofresh, which began daily production of up to 1 500 heads. Improved agronomic management and optimized fertilizer solutions further supported output. During the COVID-19 pandemic, hydroponic systems proved resilient by maintaining deliveries, while consumer demand for fresh, contaminant-free produce rose.
After 2020, the market stabilized, fluctuating slightly between 18 342 t and 18 434 t. In 2022, AgroUrbana entered the market with a new 4 000 m² industrial hydroponic facility in Cochabamba, introducing scalable production. Regulatory measures, including decrees strengthening agricultural health and contaminant control, continued to shape the sector. Projects funded by the World Bank also promoted sustainable agriculture, benefiting hydroponic lettuce producers.
